Guide

How it works

An addon records what your character does while you play. WoW saves that to a file when you log out. You upload the file here. Three steps, ten minutes the first time, thirty seconds after that.

01

Install the addon

Download BylundTracker 0.2.0 (zip). Unzip it into the AddOns folder of the client you play, so that this file exists:

World of Warcraft\_classic_era_\Interface\AddOns\BylundTracker\BylundTracker.toc

Use _classic_ for Anniversary realms and _classic_beta_ for the beta client. If the game is running, type /reload; otherwise just start it. The addon greets you in the chat on login, and /bt prints its status.

The addon does not change anything about how the game plays. It listens to the same events the default UI uses (experience gained, quest turned in, level up, death, zone changed, item equipped, loot, skill-ups, reputation) and writes a line for each of them.

02

Play, then log out

Play as usual. Every kill, quest, level, death and zone change is logged with a time, your level and your position on the zone map. Experience is sampled once a minute, so sessions get a minute-by-minute curve.

Nothing is saved to disk until you log out, exit the game or type /reload. That is how WoW works for every addon: the SavedVariables file is written at those three moments only. If you want to upload mid-session, type /bt sync, which builds the export and reloads the UI so the file is written right away.

Useful while you check that it works: /bt debug prints every event to the chat, /bt stats shows your most killed mobs and the current session, /bt quiet hides the short level/quest/death messages.

03

Find the file

Open your World of Warcraft folder (right-click the game in the Battle.net app → Show in Explorer) and go to:

World of Warcraft\_classic_era_\WTF\Account\ACCOUNTNAME\SavedVariables\BylundTracker.lua

  • _classic_era_ is the client folder: _classic_ for Anniversary, _classic_beta_ for the beta.
  • ACCOUNTNAME is your account id in capitals, often with #1 at the end (for example 110284353#1). If you have several WoW accounts there is one folder per account.
  • The file is a plain text file. It holds the log for every character on that account, so one upload covers all of them.

Paste this into the Explorer address bar to jump straight to the folder, then open the only folder inside Account:

%ProgramFiles(x86)%\World of Warcraft\_classic_era_\WTF\Account

04

Upload

Sign in with Discord, go to Upload and drop BylundTracker.lua on the page (or pick it with the file dialog). The site reads the export inside the file, stores the new events and shows you a link to each character it found.

Upload as often as you like. Every event has a running number, so uploading the same file twice adds nothing twice. Old events are kept on the site even after the addon trims its own list, which it does once it passes 6 000 events (around level 25–30 of a steady run), so upload at least once in a while on long runs.

Only .lua, .txt and .json text files up to 30 MB are accepted, and the file must contain a BylundTracker export; anything else is rejected before it is stored.

05

Share and compare

Everything you upload is private to your account. To let a friend see your characters, open Sharing and add their Discord user id (Discord → User Settings → Advanced → Developer Mode, then right-click the person → Copy User ID). When they sign in here with that Discord account, your characters show up under theirs. Removing the invite removes the access.

Compare puts two to four characters side by side, yours or shared with you: hours played when each level was reached, time per level, XP per hour, kills, quests, deaths and where the XP came from, for the whole run or a range of levels. That is where a run gets faster: the level where one route lost an hour is right there in the table.

Questions

Which clients does the addon work on?
Classic Era / Anniversary (interface 11509), the 1.60 beta client (16001) and it lists TBC, Wrath and MoP Classic versions too. It is written against the vanilla-style API, so Retail is not a target.
Does the addon upload anything by itself?
No. WoW addons cannot access the network or write files other than their SavedVariables. You upload the file yourself.
The site shows my character a few levels behind.
The file is only written on logout, exit and /reload. Type /bt sync in game, then upload again.
Kills are counted but have no npc link.
On the 1.60 beta the combat log gives addons no kill events, so kills are counted from the experience message and the npc id is taken from your target or mouseover. Mobs you never targeted get a name but no id; Wowhead links then fall back to a search.
Can I delete my data?
Yes. Each character page has a Delete link that removes the character and every event. In game, /bt reset confirm clears what the addon holds for the current character.
Something is wrong or missing.
Lua errors show once per event type in red in the chat. Send the message and what you were doing on Discord.
